HP Envy 14 Spectre Specs Unveiled

HP Envy 14 Spectre

The Envy 14 Spectre that HP has been teasing for the past week has finally been unveiled at CES and as expected it is a premium Ultrabook. The Envy 14 Spectre has a 14” screen but still manages to stay 0.78-inches thick. The weight of 3.9 pounds is conspicuously heavy for an Ultrabook, but we’re guessing the aluminum build and unique glass lid are adding extra weight to the slim frame of this laptop. You heard correct, the lid has glass on it – which is going to make for one heck of a chore to keep clean, but laptop will look gorgeous when it is clean. Think of the back of an iPhone and how easily that picks up fingerprints and multiply it by about 10 times in size and that’s what you’ve got with the Envy 14 Spectre lid.

The full specs for the Envy 14 Spectre that will be priced at $1,399 are below:

Processor: Intel Core i5-2467m 1.60GHz
Screen: 14-inch Radiance display, 1600 x 900 resolution
Memory: 4GB RAM
Storage: 128GB mSATA SSD
Thickness: 0.78-inches
Weight: 3.9 pounds
Dimensions: 12.87 inches x 8.7 inches x 0.79 inches
Ports: USB 2.0, USB 3.0, SD card reader, Mini DisplayPort, Ethernet
Keyboard: Chiclet, backlit with sensor to brighten when you approach
Wireless: 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth, WiDi
Audio: Beats Audio
Battery Life: 9 hours estimated
The processor is an existing Intel Sandy Bridge family processor so there the release date is February, no need to wait until April for the Ivy Bridge class processors with this Envy 14-3000 version.
For those fans of the older Envy 14 that were hoping for a 14-inch gaming style laptop, well, sorry you’re out of luck. There will be no dedicated graphics for this laptop and quite obviously it’s intended more for those that want a premium mobile laptop more interested in style than frame rates in Batman Arkham City.
There’s no word if this 1600 x 900 display is an IPS variety, but HP is positioning it as a premium screen with excellent viewing angles, so it certainly could be the case. It might be the same screen as the Envy 15-3000 just with a smaller panel size. Another similarity to the Envy 15 is that the Envy 14 Spectre has Beats Audio on board and the same dial type volume control.
The Envy 14 Spectre availability date is set for February 8, 2012 so there’s a little under a month to wait and we’re sure there will be plenty of reviews and feedback on this laptop by that time as well.

HP Envy 17 3D (Envy 17-2290NR) Review
HP Envy 17 3D

The HP Envy 17 3D 2290NR is a stylish, 17.3” screen desktop replacement model that features an aluminum case design and Beats Audio. Inside the box you will find a sleek professional looking laptop without all the stickers you typically find on a Windows machine fresh out of the box. Call it taking a page out of the Apple playbook or just being customer friendly, either way it’s nice not to have to worry about removing stickers and glue remnants from a laptop you spent $1,500 on. The Envy 17 2290NR comes standard with an Intel Quad Core i7 processor and switchable graphics. The hybrid graphics makes it possible for this laptop to double as a gaming machine by using its high mid-range AMD graphics and also function as a battery friendly work machine by running on Intel integrated graphics when you need it to. The Envy 17-2290NR machine can be found on HP.com for $1,499.99. In my case I ordered a custom built model with the following configuration on my Employee Purchase Program for $1,466.21 before taxes, and free shipping:
HP Envy 17-2290 Specs
Processor: Intel Core i7-2670QM (2.2 GHz, 6MB L3 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 3.1 GHz
OS: Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Screen: 17.3" diagonal Full HD HP 3D Ultra BrightView Infinity LED Display (1920×1080)
Graphics: 1GB GDDR5 Radeon(TM) HD 6850M Graphics
Memory: 8GB 1333MHz DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
Storage: 1.5TB 7200 rpm Dual Hard Drive (750GB x 2) (Raid 0)
Battery: One 6-Cell (around 3 hours battery life) and One 9-Cell (around 5 hours battery life) Lithium Ion
Optical Drive: Blu-ray player & SuperMulti DVD burner
Ports: 4 USB (3 USB 2.0 and 1 USB 3.0, one of the USB 2.0′s is a shared eSATA port), HDMI, VGA monitor out, mini Display Port, 1Gbps Ethernet LAN, 1 Headphone, 1 Headphone/Mic
Dimensions: 16.38" (W) x 10.83" (D) x 1.25" (min Height)/2.15" (max Height)
Weight: 7.82 lbs
Webcam: HP TrueVision HD Webcam
Wireless: Intel 802.11a/b/g/n WLAN and Bluetooth with Wireless Display Support
Keyboard: Backlit Keyboard with numeric keypad
3D Glasses: HP 3D Active Shutter Glasses

Envy 17 3D Reason for Buying

When I embarked on finding a replacement laptop for my broken 17" HP DV7 3160us, I looked at the 17” Apple MacBook Pro, Dell XPS 17 and Sony Vaio FE. Although nice, I couldn’t bring myself to spend the money on the MacBook Pro 17, it starts at $2,499 and was simply above what I wanted to spend. Another downside for buying the MacBook Pro or Sony VAIO FE was the fact I multi-boot several OS’s and having dual drives is a very appealing feature to make that easier, the MacBook Pro and VAIO FE do not offer dual drives while the XPS 17 and Envy 17 do. With the Apple MBP and VAIO FE out of the picture that left the HP and Dell. Priced slightly lower, I ultimately chose the HP Envy 17 3D because I preferred the look over the XPS 17. The Envy looks like what I expect in a high end laptop, while the XPS 17 is somewhat frumpy and inelegant. I love the sleek design of the Envy 17 and also appreciate the lack of clutter caused by stickers.

HP dv7t Quad Edition Review

HP dv7t Quad Edition

The HP Pavilion dv7t Quad Edition Series (dv7tqe) is a desktop replacement style laptop available from HP.com which currently starts at $899.99. The model I purchased came in at $1,199.99 with a number of additional options added. This price includes a $300 discount and various free upgrades being offered by HP at the time.
When looking for a new laptop I primarily wanted something at a price of around $1,000, a 17” or greater screen, and a powerful processor and graphics card capable of handling just about anything I threw at it. I already had a smaller laptop I used all over my apartment for various tasks, but it was severely underpowered and unimpressive when running games and sometimes even displaying full-screen video. This laptop wouldn’t completely replace my smaller laptop, just compliment it with more power in exchange for less portability.
While there were a number of manufacturers that had laptops which could potentially satisfy my requirements, very few of those manufacturers had fully customizable laptop choices. Many manufacturers have a “CUSTOMIZE” button next to their various models of laptops on their website, but usually few real choices await the potential buyer (getting to pick a version of Windows 7 does not count as customizing a laptop). I still looked at just about every manufacturer I could imagine, and in the end chose the dv7tqe because it offered everything I was looking for, and then some, at the most competitive price.

Here are the specifications of my dv7tqe as ordered:
Display: 17.3-inch diagonal Full HD Anti-glare LED-backlit Display (1920 x 1080)
Processor: Intel i7-2670QM (2.2 Ghz, 6MB l3 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 3.1 Ghz
OS: Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Graphics Card: 2GB Radeon HD 6770M GDDR5
Memory: 8GB DDR3 (2 Dimm)
Storage: 750GB 7200RPM Hard Drive
Battery: 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
Optical Drive: Combination Blue-ray Player & SuperMulti DVD Burner
Ports: 2 USB 2.0, 2 USB 3.0, Ethernet, VGA, HDMI, Microphone, 2 Headphone
Dimensions: 16.38" (W) x 10.83" (D) x 1.24" (min H) / 1.42” (max H)
Weight: 6.72 lbs
Color: Dark Umber
Multimedia Inputs: HP TrueVision HD Webcam with Integrated Microphone; Fingerprint Reader
Wireless: Intel 802.11 b/g/n WLAN and Bluetooth
A few comments regarding my build out and the options HP had available. First, as I wanted the best possible graphics and gaming performance, the extra $150 for the 1080p screen over the stock 900p screen was a must buy. What would be the point of a giant screen if you couldn’t back it up with great resolution? Second, while processor upgrades were available for $150 to $350, the potential gains seemed pretty insignificant. A few tenths of a GHz when you’re already pushing into the 3’s in turbo mode just wasn’t worth it to me. Third, taking the 2GB option over the 1GB option on the video card was probably a waste, even at only an additional cost of $50 more. Most reliable sources will tell you that 2GB will offer no performance increase over 1GB for this level of graphics card (or possibly most any level of graphics card). Fourth, you can probably skip the 7200RPM drive if you’re planning on installing a Solid State Drive (SSD) yourself. More on that later.

HP Envy 15-3000 Review (Late 2011 Envy 15)

HP Envy 15-3000

The HP Envy 15 provides the performance of a desktop replacement in a stylish, reasonably portable package. It is ideally suited for users who demand more from a notebook, but prioritize portability or display clarity over maximum GPU performance. The Envy 15 starts at $1,099, with HP’s recommended configuration currently selling for $1,439. Significant rebates are sometimes available, which can reduce the price even further. I took advantage of a fortuitous 33% rebate promotional code, dropping the price of my customized unit by just over $600. With the rebate, I ordered mine for a scant $1,219 (not including extended warranty, tax, or shipping) , with the following specifications:

HP Envy 15t-3000 Specs

Processor: Intel Core i7-2760QM (2.4 GHz, 6MB L3 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 3.5 GHz
