One consideration when buying a laptop such as the HP Envy 15 is how easy it is to access and upgrade components. This is especially a concern for power users who want to right away upgrade memory, install an SSD or maybe replace an optical drive with a storage drive. There have been a few questions regarding how easy it is to access components in the Envy 15-3000 so here’s a picture tour of opening up the machine and what is and isn’t easy to get to:

Half of the back panel unlocks by simply moving a switch, allowing it to be slid off and providing easy access to the battery and hard disk
The other half of the bottom panel has six screws keeping it in place. Once they are removed, it also slides off easily. This allows access to the memory and other internals for easy upgrades.
One question that has popped up is in regards to replacing the optical drive (shown above) with a storage drive instead. As you can somewhat tell from the picture, this isn’t going to be straight forward and certainly you would need to reference the disassembly documents for the Envy 15-3000to figure out whether there’s clearance space and the right adapters there to even put in a second hard drive. Making a modification of this type would almost certainly void the HP warranty. Since you get a 2-year standard warranty with the Envy 15 that’s quite a valuable aspect of the laptop and not one you’d want to lose.
