Lenovo has already announced over 20+ laptops in the past few days, but they’re not done, the IdeaPad Yoga Windows 8 Tablet convertible style laptop was unveiled today at CES 2012. The IdeaPad Yoga is a laptop to tablet convertible that quite literally flips over itself. The hinge is like that of a door that can open in both directions, so you can either close the screen down onto the keyboard like a typical closed laptop or rotate it almost 360-degrees the other way so the screen lid is on the base of the laptop. The hinge and screen are very flexible, and thus the name Yoga. The specs on the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga are as follows:
Processor: Intel Core i7 Ivy Bridge
Screen: 13.3-inches, 1600 x 900 resolution, touchscreen
OS: Windows 8
Storage: Flash SSD
Memory: 8GB RAM
Thickness: 0.67-inches
Weight: 3.1 lbs
Keyboard: Chiclet (not backlit)
Battery Life: 8 hours
Price: $1,199
Release: Fall 2012
You’ll notice that the release date isn’t until the second half of the year, that’s because the IdeaPad Yoga is being built around the new Windows 8 that will be released around the September time frame. Windows 8 will be much more tablet friendly and offer better touch screen input.
A 13.3” tablet that weighs 3.1lbs is kind of bulky to hold and not one that you would be able to carry around and do field work, but you could easily lay it down or prop it up like an easel for viewing and touch input. Whether people take to this design or it becomes just another cool looking but gimmicky implementation remains to be seen, the road of tablet convertibles is one littered with seemingly good ideas that just didn’t take off.
